December is when Kashmir turns white. Gulmarg gets its first proper snow, Dal Lake mornings start below zero, and the valley settles into Chillai Kalan, the 40 coldest days of the year. If you want snow, this is the month. You only need to plan it a little differently from a summer trip.
This guide comes from our team in Srinagar, who run Kashmir trips all winter. It covers the weather in December, when it actually snows, a 5-day itinerary, what the trip costs and what to pack.
Quick answer: Yes, December is a good time to visit Kashmir if you want snow. Srinagar is around 5–10°C by day and drops to between −1 and −4°C at night. Gulmarg stays near freezing all day and falls to between −6 and −10°C at night. Gulmarg usually has snow from early or mid-December, and the most reliable snow starts after 21 December (Chillai Kalan). Plan 5–6 days: Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam, with Sonamarg as a day trip. A 4-night trip starts from about ₹9,999 per person without flights. Prices rise over Christmas and New Year, so book early.

Is December a good time to visit Kashmir?
Yes, especially if snow is the reason you’re going. December gives you the first real snowfall of the season without the deep freeze and road closures that January can bring. Hotels are calmer before Christmas, and the light on snow over Dal Lake is some of the best of the year.
- Good for: couples and honeymooners, families who want their first snow, photographers, and beginners who want to try skiing in Gulmarg.
- Think twice if: you dislike cold, you are travelling with infants or elderly people with breathing problems, or you can’t keep one buffer day in case of snow delays.
Kashmir weather in December: temperature by place
Temperatures change with each snow spell, so use these as typical ranges, not promises. Nights are what catch people out. Even Srinagar regularly goes below zero.
| Place | Day | Night | Snow in December |
|---|---|---|---|
| Srinagar | 5°C to 10°C | −1°C to −4°C | Light snow possible, more likely after 20 Dec |
| Gulmarg | −1°C to 4°C | −6°C to −10°C | Most likely; snow cover usually by mid-December |
| Pahalgam | 2°C to 7°C | −4°C to −8°C | Often, especially second half of the month |
| Sonamarg | −2°C to 3°C | −8°C to −12°C | Often heavy; good snow day trip |
When does it snow in Kashmir in December?
The higher places get snow first. Gulmarg, Sonamarg and the upper parts of Pahalgam usually get their first proper snowfall between late November and mid-December. Srinagar city gets light snow some years in December, and its heavier snow usually comes in late December and January.
Chillai Kalan runs from 21 December to 31 January. It is the coldest 40-day stretch of the Kashmiri winter, and the most likely time for snow on the valley floor. If seeing snow is the whole point of your trip, travel after 15 December and make sure Gulmarg is on your plan. Gulmarg is the safest bet for snow.
Kashmir in the first week vs the last week of December
| First week (1–7 Dec) | Last week (24–31 Dec) | |
|---|---|---|
| Snow | Gulmarg possible, valley mostly dry | Much more likely across Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg |
| Cold | Cold nights, pleasant afternoons | Chillai Kalan: freezing nights, icy mornings |
| Prices | Lowest of the month | Highest (Christmas and New Year) |
| Crowds | Quiet | Busy in Gulmarg; book gondola tickets early |
| Best for | Value, sightseeing, calm Dal Lake | Guaranteed-feel snow, New Year in the snow |
Best places to visit in Kashmir in December
1. Gulmarg – snow, gondola and skiing

Gulmarg is the heart of a December trip. It sits about 50 km from Srinagar (around 2 hours by road) and is usually under snow from mid-December. Take the Gulmarg Gondola: Phase 1 goes up to Kongdoori, and Phase 2 goes on towards Apharwat when the weather allows. Tickets are about ₹750–₹1,000 per person per phase. They sell out in peak weeks, so book in advance on the official JKCCC portal. Phase 2 often closes in strong wind or fresh snow, so keep your Gulmarg day flexible. You can also try a beginner ski lesson, sledging or a snowmobile ride. Read our full Gulmarg travel guide.
2. Srinagar – Dal Lake in winter

Shikara rides still run in December. Go late morning, when the mist lifts and the snowy peaks show across the lake. Houseboats are heated in winter. Ask for a room with a bukhari (wood stove) or electric blanket. Warm up with kahwa in the old city, and try harissa, Srinagar’s slow-cooked winter breakfast, served from the end of autumn. More in our Srinagar travel guide.
3. Pahalgam – frozen streams and pine forests

Pahalgam is about 95 km from Srinagar (3 hours). In December the Lidder river partly freezes and the pine forests hold the snow. Some higher valleys and pony routes close after heavy snow, so treat Pahalgam as a scenic, slow day rather than a sightseeing list. See our Pahalgam guide.
4. Sonamarg – the new all-weather snow day trip
Sonamarg used to be hard to reach in winter. The Z-Morh (Sonamarg) tunnel, opened in January 2025, bypasses the avalanche-prone stretch of road, so Sonamarg is now a realistic snow day trip from Srinagar (about 80 km). Roads can still close for a day after very heavy snowfall, so check the morning traffic advisory. Details in our Sonamarg guide.
5-day Kashmir itinerary for December
This is the route we plan most often in December. It keeps the long drives short and puts Gulmarg in the middle, so a snow day can be moved.
| Day | Plan | Night |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrive in Srinagar, sunset shikara ride on Dal Lake, settle into a heated houseboat or hotel | Srinagar |
| Day 2 | Day trip to Sonamarg through the Z-Morh tunnel, snow play, back by evening | Srinagar |
| Day 3 | Drive to Gulmarg, Gondola Phase 1 (Phase 2 if open), sledging or a ski lesson | Gulmarg or Srinagar |
| Day 4 | Drive to Pahalgam via saffron fields at Pampore, snow walk by the Lidder river | Pahalgam |
| Day 5 | Morning in Pahalgam, return to Srinagar for your flight or train | – |
Want this planned for you? Our Kashmir Winter Special (5 days / 4 nights) follows this route with heated stays and snow-ready cabs. For a longer stay, see the Kashmir winter tour package.
How much does a Kashmir trip cost in December?
These are typical per-person prices for a 4-night / 5-day trip on twin sharing, including stays, breakfast and dinner, a private cab and sightseeing. Flights and gondola tickets are extra.
| Trip style | 1–20 December | 24 Dec – 2 Jan |
|---|---|---|

| Standard (3–4 star, houseboat night) | ₹15,000 – ₹24,000 | ₹21,000 – ₹30,000 |
| Premium (4–5 star, SUV) | ₹28,000 and up | ₹38,000 and up |

How to reach Kashmir in December
- By air: Srinagar airport has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and other cities. Morning fog or snow can delay flights in winter, so avoid tight connections on your last day.
- By train: The Vande Bharat between Katra and Srinagar is built for sub-zero temperatures and has kept running during snow spells, when roads were closed.
- By road: The Jammu–Srinagar highway (NH44) stays open most days but can close for a day after heavy snow. The Mughal Road is closed in winter.
What to pack for Kashmir in December
- Thermal inners (top and bottom), 2 sets
- A down or heavily padded jacket, plus a fleece layer
- Waterproof, ankle-high shoes with good grip (you can hire gumboots in Gulmarg)
- Woollen socks, gloves, a cap that covers the ears, and a muffler
- Sunglasses and SPF 50 sunscreen; snow glare is strong
- Lip balm, moisturiser and any regular medicines
- A power bank; phone batteries drain fast in the cold
Tips from our Srinagar team
- Keep one buffer day. Snow can delay a road or the gondola by a day. A flexible plan saves your trip.
- Use a local, snow-ready cab. Drivers carry snow chains for the Tangmarg–Gulmarg road; self-drive is not a good idea in December.
- Book Gulmarg gondola tickets early for 20 December onwards, and go up in the morning when Phase 2 is most likely to be open.
- Ask for heating. Confirm that your hotel or houseboat has room heaters or bukharis, and hot water through the night.
- Carry some cash. Card and UPI work in most places, but mobile signal can be patchy in Gulmarg and Sonamarg.
